Nigerian Startups Find a Prominent Base in Kano
Kano, the commercial capital of northern Nigeria, has made a significant leap into the global tech news landscape. In recent years, the city has undergone transformative changes, marked by a surge in the number of startups, incubation hubs, and willing investors.
One of the pioneers in this movement is Startup Kano, one of the first tech incubation hubs in Kano. Over the years, Startup Kano has grown to become one of the largest in the northern region, serving as a gateway into tech for over 50,000 youth.
The journey of Startup Kano was not without challenges. Initially, there was no existing model for them due to the vastly different tech ecosystems in Kano. Technology awareness was almost non-existent, and the idea of investing in technology instead of traditional brick-and-mortar businesses was largely unaccepted. People in Kano only understood technology in terms of using social media platforms like Facebook. Anything beyond that was met with distrust.
Years of intense tech advocacy were required to garner interest from young people and, eventually, investors in Kano. Aisha Tofa, co-founder of Startup Kano, played a significant role in this advocacy. She believes that education, mentorship, and creating the right market are foundational challenges that need to be addressed in Kano.
In 2022, Kano joined the top 1,000 startup cities globally for the first time. This achievement was underscored by the success of startups like the mobility startup founded by Kano-born Khalil Halilu. In the GITEX Pitch competition, Halilu's startup won $8,000 in the mobility and smart city category.
However, the Kano tech ecosystem still has a long way to go. As Ahmed Idris, founder of Enovate Labs, cautions, the excitement within the Kano tech ecosystem should not be mistaken for a major transformation. Enovate Labs is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering innovation in Kano.
The anonymous co-founder of Startup Kano emphasizes the importance of adapting to Kano's cultural context for the tech ecosystem to be successful. This co-founder, now bootstrapping his own tech-enabled business, prioritizes finding the market for his product over funding.
Despite the progress made, global organizations supporting the startup scene in Kano in recent years were not found in the provided search results. However, global organizations, the government, and private individuals have recognized the potential in Kano and are eager to contribute.
In 2023, only about 6% of tech founders from the northern region of Nigeria have access to venture capital funding. This disparity highlights the need for continued support and investment in the Kano tech ecosystem.
Despite these challenges, the Kano tech ecosystem is still relatively small compared to other regions. However, there have been remarkable instances of people and startups achieving great things, demonstrating the potential for further growth and development.
