Northern Trains: New Smart Tickets Simplify Harrogate to Leeds Journey

From 29 September 2025, rail passengers on Northern trains between Harrogate and Leeds can enjoy a simpler and more affordable travel experience. The new system allows passengers to start journeys by simply pressing a button on their phone, eliminating the need for pre-booking and reducing prices previously inflated by third-party apps like travelocity.

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority, led by Mayor Tracy Brabin, has coordinated the introduction of smart tickets for this route. Passengers using the app during the trial receive £15 worth of free travel, backed by the government. This initiative aims to create a better-connected region and encourage sustainable transport.

The new system works by automatically registering when passengers get off the train. At the end of the day, the system charges the lowest possible fare. A unique barcode in the app can be scanned for ticket inspections and to go through ticket barriers, making the process seamless and efficient.

The trial of simplified train tickets on the Harrogate to Leeds route begins on 29 September 2025. Passengers can enjoy a more convenient and cost-effective travel experience, with the added benefit of £15 worth of free travel during the trial. The West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Mayor Tracy Brabin aim to make this region better connected and more sustainable through this innovative approach to rail travel.
