Third-party controller manufacturer PowerA unveils initial licenced pro controller tailored for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, boasting Hall sensor thumbsticks for enhanced performance.

Officially-licensed, budget-friendly Switch 2 controller announced by PowerA

PowerA, a leading peripheral manufacturer, has revealed its initial accessory lineup for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, including the first officially licensed third-party Pro Controller for the platform. The collection, set to launch concurrently with the Switch 2, also encompasses a Switch 2 carrying case and a screen protector. Although pre-orders are not yet available, interested parties can sign up on PowerA's website to receive notifications.

The PowerA Advantage wired controller will be available in various color options, including two Mario-themed designs, black, and more. Priced at $39.99, it undercuts Nintendo's official Switch 2 Pro Controller, serving as an economical choice for some. Notably, this controller will feature Hall Effect thumbsticks, which Nintendo has yet to confirm for its Switch 2 controllers.

Though pre-orders are not yet live, you can express your interest by signing up on PowerA's website.

  • Buy it if:
  • You prefer an affordable option over Nintendo's official Pro Controller.
  • You're content with a wired connection.
  • You don't require immediate availability.
  • Don't buy it if:
  • You seek wireless play.
  • You'd rather wait for compatibility clarification with the original Switch's controllers on the new console.

The new PowerA Advantage controller is designed to combat the stick drift issue that affected the original Switch's Joy-Cons. While Nintendo has stated that it has redesigned the Switch 2's thumbsticks, it has not definitively confirmed the use of stick drift-resistant components.

The controller includes two back buttons, a distinguishable "C" button, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and dedicated audio control switches. However, as it's wired, it may not cater to users who aspire for untethered play, requiring a separate investment in Nintendo's official gamepad for wireless functionality.

PowerA is the first accessory manufacturer confirmed to be developing a competitive controller for the updated platform, set to launch on June 5. Regarding forward compatibility with the original Switch's third-party controllers, PowerA mentioned it is actively testing and verifying compatibility across its current Nintendo Switch accessory catalog to support the Nintendo Switch 2. Further details on forward compatibility will be shared soon.

In addition to the controller, PowerA's lineup includes a Switch 2 Slimline carrying case priced at $19.99 and a screen protector available for $12.99. If you've managed to secure a Switch 2 pre-order, these accessories might be worth considering.
