Opel's Solar Power Breakthrough: New Installation Powers Eisenach Plant
Opel has announced a significant step towards sustainability. A photovoltaic installation in Krauthausen will directly power the Opel plant in Eisenach, covering nearly 20 megawatts. The project is part of Stellantis' wider initiative to make production sites climate-friendly, with similar projects in France and Italy.
The installation, developed by Athos Solar, spans a 21-hectare site and was completed in just five months. It consists of approximately 32,300 solar modules and is expected to generate around 19 gigawatt-hours annually. This power will be transmitted via a seven-kilometer cable, laid using a nature- and road-friendly drilling method.
Opel has signed a Direct Wire PPA with Athos Solar for this expected yield. The automaker views this model as a long-term, calculable, and climate-friendly power source, also relieving the public grid. Meanwhile, a 'green campus' is being created at the Opel headquarters in Ruesselsheim, integrating solar installations into a green roof.
The Krauthausen installation is a testament to Opel's commitment to solar power and sustainability. With similar projects in France and Italy, Stellantis aims to make all its production sites climate-friendly. The successful completion of this solar project, despite previous insolvency negotiations, marks a significant milestone in Opel's green transition.
