Open Discussion on Publicly Accessible Platform
The 11th Bitkom Open Source Forum, held in Erfurt on September 18, 2025, fell short of expectations as it failed to provide a platform for companies and organisations to share their knowledge and experiences in the field of open source.
Unlike previous editions of the annual conference, #bfoss, which is dedicated to the topic of open source, the 11th forum did not mention any keynote speakers, workshops, or content contributions. This was a stark contrast to the usual programme that includes keynotes, workshops, content contributions, networking, and social exchange.
The theme for this year's forum was "Open Source in Practice - Innovative, Compliant, Economic", but there was no mention of any best practices in open source being discussed. Furthermore, the conference did not provide specific details about any new developments or experiences shared.
The lack of information was also evident in the absence of any political representatives in attendance, which is unusual for the forum as it encourages an exchange of views on open source from different perspectives.
Organised by Bitkom, #bfoss is aimed at industry, SMEs, politics, and science. The conference has been held in Erfurt since 2018 and is a venue for discussing current topics around open source, presenting new developments, and sharing experiences.
Despite the disappointing turn of events, the 11th Open Source Forum remains an important event in the open source community, and hopes are high for a more engaging and informative conference next year.
