Grocery Sector Shows Resilience and Evolution, According to Placer.ai Report

In the ever-changing retail landscape, the grocery sector continues to be a key player, as highlighted in a recent report by Placer.ai. The report, titled "Grocery Visitiation Trends in 2025," provides insights into the latest trends and changes shaping the industry.

Ethan Chernofsky, now the Chief Marketing Officer at Placer.ai, stated that the retail and grocery sectors are undergoing significant change. In his new role, Chernofsky will oversee marketing programs and innovations at the company. Chernofsky, who joined Placer.ai in 2019, previously served as SVP of marketing.

One of the key trends identified in the report is the growth of specialty and value grocery chains. These segments, which have been attracting more visits due to consumer demand for unique products and affordability, have emerged as top performers, particularly visible in 2024 and continuing into 2025.

Another significant trend is the integration of healthcare and wellness into grocery stores. Grocery stores are increasingly becoming important players in healthcare and wellness by offering health-related products and services. This shift is influencing visitation patterns, as shoppers seek more than just food items from their grocery visits.

The report also shows that consumers are gravitating toward affordable brands and value propositions but also care about getting value at mid- to high-price points. Strong communication of value is critical to attracting visits.

In terms of major grocers, Walmart, a leading player in the sector, has maintained stable year-over-year foot traffic in Q2 2025. This stability underpins Walmart’s continued strength in the grocery sector, reflecting successful omnichannel strategies integrating e-commerce growth with in-store visits.

Placer.ai’s location intelligence data enables grocers to monitor visitation trends, adjust business strategies, and optimize competitive positioning based on detailed foot traffic analytics and consumer behavior patterns. These insights are crucial for strategic decision-making in the competitive grocery market.

Elsewhere in the industry, Hormel Foods announced changes in leadership. James P. Ettinger's role as interim CEO will end after 15 months, and James P. Snee has been named the new President of Hormel Foods, joining the company's board of directors.

At the National Restaurant Show, the latest culinary innovations and product launches with a potential spillover effect on grocery are being tracked. Giacomo Campinoti, a longtime Italian brand exec, heads up the American business of Filippo Berio USA. Schnucks, Forty Acres Market, and Placer.ai shared insights in the GroceryTech session.

Chernofsky's marketing approach at Placer.ai focuses on understanding causes and implications of changes in the retail sector. Prior to joining Placer.ai, Chernofsky held roles as VP of marketing at Orbs, director of corporate marketing at Similar Web, and VP at Headline Media.

  2. In addition to the growth of specialty and value grocery chains, the business of healthcare and wellness within grocery stores, facilitated by technological advancements, is another significant trend influencing visitation patterns in the sector.
