Pope Leo XIV steadfastly declines the creation of an avatar, expressing apprehension over the swift advancement of artificial intelligence.
Pope Leo XIV, the head of the Catholic Church and the Peruvian pontiff, has expressed concerns about the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in his first interview since his election in May 2025. Conducted by U.S. journalist Elise Ann Allen and published by CRUX, a Vatican-related media outlet, the interview focuses on the pressing issues facing the Church in the digital age.
The pontiff, who developed more than twenty years of his pastoral career in Peru, warned about the danger of the digital world making people pawns or leaving them behind. He believes that the Church must raise its voice if the value of humanity is lost and the digital world is considered the most important.
Pope Leo XIV emphasized that human life has meaning because of human beings and human relationships, not artificial intelligence. He expressed concern about the spread of fake news through various media and considers it very destructive. The pontiff believes it will be difficult to discover the presence of God in AI.
In the interview, the pontiff also refused to have an avatar created with artificial intelligence, stating that if anyone should not be represented by an avatar, it is the Pope. The book with the interview, titled "León XIV. Citizen of the World, Missionary of the 21st Century", went on sale in Peru's bookstores on a specific date and will be available in Spain on a specific date as well.
The pontiff values mutual respect, the importance of family, equality, and peace as human values. He stated that the Church must adapt to the digital world while maintaining its voice and mission in guiding people towards these values. The pontiff also warned about the danger of the digital world following its own path without the Church's voice.
Pope Leo XIV's interview marks a significant step in his pontificate, as he addresses the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital age. The interview serves as a call to action for the Church to remain a voice of reason and a guide for humanity in a rapidly changing world.
