A 2032 potential collision with Earth by asteroid 2024 YR4 has triggered concern, despite a low 2.3% probability of impact. Currently, there is no known asteroid with a higher impact risk than YR4, which has spurred scrutiny from astronomers and the public alike.

Context and Risk Assessment

Discovered in December 2024 by the ATLAS telescope in Rio Hurtado, Chile, asteroid 2024 YR4 has been designated a level 3 risk on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale. This system indicates the potential threat of a collision and warns attention but poses a low immediate danger. The scale ranges from 0 (no threat) to 10 (global catastrophe), with level 1 triggers investigations.

According to NASA, if an impact were to occur, it would likely happen around 2:02 pm on December 22, 2032. The potential impact zone encompasses the eastern Pacific Ocean, northern South America, and Africa, although the exact trajectory remains uncertain.

Size and Threat Assessment

The asteroid is estimated to be between 131 and 295 feet (40 to 90 meters) in diameter, roughly equivalent to a large building. However, due to a lack of precise data, the exact size of 2024 YR4 remains under scrutiny. Experts are utilizing powerful telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope to gather more information.

Currently, the asteroid is tens of millions of miles away from Earth and moving further with time. By April 2025, it will disappear behind the Sun, rendering it invisible until 2028.

Global Cooperation and Potential Countermeasures

Amidst the uncertainty, NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and other space agencies have joined forces to evaluate the potential risk and, if necessary, devise countermeasures. HERA, another spacecraft, is en route to Dimorphos to evaluate the mission's long-term success, due to arrive in January 2026.
