Powerful Electric Hypercar Set for Launch by BYD: World's Most Potent Electric Vehicle Yet, Packing Nearly 3000 Horsepower
The automotive world is abuzz with anticipation as BYD prepares to unveil its next-generation hypercar, the U9 Track Edition. This electric powerhouse is poised to redefine the boundaries of performance, boasting an estimated power output of around 2,978 to 3,019 horsepower (about 2,200 to 3,019 kW)[1][2][4][5].
This quad-motor system positions the U9 hypercar as potentially the most powerful electric production car globally, surpassing rivals like the Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija, which have powertrains closer to 1,500 kW[1][2].
The motor technology underpinning this performance is cutting-edge: BYD has developed electric motors capable of spinning at over 30,000 rpm, the highest speed for any production vehicle motor, as announced in their 1,000 kW charging technology reveal earlier in 2025[1].
Performance-wise, the U9 Track Edition is expected to exceed the current model’s impressive 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 2.36 seconds significantly, potentially challenging sub-2-second sprints similar to the Rimac Nevera’s 1.72 seconds. It features enhanced aerodynamics, including a fixed carbon-fiber rear wing, front splitter, and adjustable diffuser, plus upgraded suspension and brakes to cope with the extreme power[1][2][5].
Key performance figures and specs summarize as follows:
| Attribute | Specification | |-------------------------------|--------------------------------------------| | Power Output | Approx. 2,978 to 3,019 HP (2,200–2,220 kW)| | Motor Configuration | Quad motor (four motors, one per wheel) | | Motor Power Rating | Each motor ~555 kW | | Motor RPM Capability | Over 30,000 rpm | | 0-100 km/h Acceleration | Expected < 2 seconds (faster than current 2.36s)| | Top Speed | Around 350 km/h (track-focused variant) | | Tyres | 325/30 R20 all around (track edition) | | Aerodynamics & Chassis | Carbon fiber roof, fixed rear wing, front splitter, adjustable diffuser | | Kerb Weight | Approximately 2,480 – 2,630 kg |
The U9 is currently undergoing tests at the Nürburgring racetrack, with a red U9 spotted on the track in a video posted by Drivegreen[6]. More details on the upcoming model are likely to be revealed before the end of the year.
The U9 is equipped with an 80 kWh BYD blade battery pack that offers a CLTC range of up to 450 km and a WLTP range of approximately 370 km[3]. It has a starting price of over $A232,064 and is available in showrooms across China[7].
Riz Akhtar, the founder of carloop, a platform for electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts, is a mechanical engineer who drives a red Tesla Model 3 and has a passion for EVs. "The U9 is a testament to the rapid advancements in EV technology," Akhtar said. "It's exciting to see a company like BYD pushing the boundaries of what's possible with electric vehicles."
