Ferrari Driver Sets New Record for Fastest Car Drive on Warship Flight Deck
Italian driver Fabio Barone made history on the Italian aircraft carrier Nave Trieste by setting a new speed record for driving a race car on a navy ship's flight deck. The record-setting attempt, which took place in Civitavecchia along Italy's Mediterranean coast, is pending review by Guinness World Records.
Barone surpassed his previous record of 152 kph (94.4 mph) set on another aircraft carrier, Giuseppe Garibaldi, by driving a Ferrari SF90 at a speed of 164 kph (101.9 mph). The SF90's headline number and the precise, one-shot braking window are what make the feat notable beyond mere acceleration.
The Trieste's deck length and 'ski jump' required Barone to hit speed and immediately scrub it, a challenging choreography. Before the attempt, the flight deck was dried to ensure maximum traction and peak braking due to the short stopping distance. Barone made multiple warm-up passes to heat the SF90's V8 engine before launching from the aft end and stopping safely.
The event was attended by reporters, naval officers, VIPs, and children serving as honorary 'mechanics.' Kenny Loggins' 'Danger Zone' was played during the attempt, adding to the thrilling atmosphere. Race engineer Alessandro Tedino warned that the deck needed to be dry for maximum traction and peak braking.
Barone stressed that concentration was the main factor that helped him set the record. His 160 kph haul tops other high-profile carrier-deck sprints that weren't officially billed as the fastest, such as a Porsche Taycan Turbo S accelerating to 145 kph on the USS Hornet in 2019.
Barone's record-setting drive on the flight deck of a warship was set in 2022, and his team will submit their certified result to Guinness World Records for official recognition.
