Racing Game Debut on Nintendo Switch 2: Mario Kart World Delivers an Ideal Launch Experience

Revamped Mario Kart Thrills on Switch 2

I've clocked in more hours on Mario Kart than I'd care to admit, and after diving into the latest installment with Nintendo's new Switch 2, I can confirm it's just as addictive as ever. With Mario Kart World, Nintendo invites players to immerse themselves in a world buzzing with action, racing, and chaos - and it's only the beginning!

Nintendo gave us the chance to play Mario Kart World for nearly eight hours straight last week. While we barely scratched the surface of this game's offerings, we got a taste of the massive improvements packed into the title. The game feels familiar yet fresh, incorporating new features like a free roam mode that lets you explore a vast, interconnected world, 24-player races (twice the previous maximum!), GameChat mode with video and voice chat support, and more.

It's essential to clarify that this isn't a full review; we'll get to that once we've spent more time exploring all of Mario Kart World's modes and the expanded GameChat functionality. In the meantime, let's go over our initial impressions.

When it comes to Mario Kart, the core gameplay remains unchanged: players pick their favorite Nintendo character, choose a kart or bike, and compete in various racing modes such as Grand Prix, versus, or battle mode. But with Mario Kart World, Nintendo has amped up the fun to the max. Racing with up to 24 players adds a thrilling sense of chaos that's hard to resist.

The joy of Mario Kart lies in its unpredictable, fast-paced nature. You never know when a well-placed item like a blue shell or a Super Star will drastically alter the rankings, taking a player from the brink of failure to potential victory. That unique blend of driving skill and strategic item usage has always been the series' charm, and Mario Kart World carries this essence flawlessly. Prepare for a rollercoaster of emotions, as the game delivers non-stop highs, lows, and just about every emotion in between.

In Mario Kart World, Nintendo has dialed the excitement level to 11. The redesigned characters and their outrageous outfits and vehicles are a sight to behold, with some '80s-inspired gear and Sony-esque designs that are bound to become internet sensations. The list wouldn't be complete without mentioning the addition of Cow, a beloved character from the Moo Moo Meadows track - you won't find a more popular choice for memes!

The new free roam mode brings a sense of life and exploration to the game, as you travel the world map filled with NPC racers, collectable items, and hidden rewards. The Grand Prix offers exciting new cups consisting of four races, while Battle Mode (Balloon Battle and Coin Runners) and VS Races make their return. The Knockout Tour mode, however, stands out as my personal favorite. In this elimination-style race, slow racers are booted out at various checkpoints, making for a nail-biting, intense experience. A new capability called rail grinding has also been introduced, allowing players to grind along obstacles for strategic advantages. While not quite as simple as grinding in Tony Hawk Pro Skater, timed right, it could give you the edge you need to overtake an opponent or dodge incoming items.

We had a chance to try several of the GameChat modes, including using the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera to show our faces during a four-player local co-op race. Unfortunately, the camera's image quality leaves room for improvement, often struggling to keep our faces in frame. However, the feature adds a fun twist, letting us celebrate wins or taunt opponents without needing to physically interact. When it comes to voice chat, the feature works, but elements such as noise reduction and clarity could use some refinement.

Overall, Mario Kart World is a fantastic choice for the Switch 2's debut game. While the price has sparked debate—the digital and physical game card versions are $80, while the $500 Mario Kart World Switch 2 bundle offers a slightly more affordable alternative—the wealth of content on offer justifies the cost. With hundreds of hours already under my belt, I can't wait to see what Nintendo has in store for Mario Kart World in the future. If there's one game the Switch 2 absolutely needs, it's Mario Kart World - it embodies everything that makes a Nintendo game unique!
