RACV Expands Roadside Assistance to Include Electric Vehicles
The Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) has expanded its emergency roadside assistance to include electric vehicles (EVs). This new service caters to the unique needs of EVs, including help with flat tires.
EVs have specific tire requirements due to their design and operation. RACV's new service recognises this, offering support tailored to EV owners.
EV tires are engineered differently from those of traditional cars. They are designed to be quieter, with low rolling resistance to improve EV range. However, they are also heavier duty, built to carry the extra load of large batteries and withstand greater forces. This is because EVs are generally heavier than traditional cars and can cause more wear and tear on tires.
Specialised EV tires are recommended for optimal performance. They are engineered and rated differently from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle tires. Companies like Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, and Goodyear produce these tires, which are designed with lower rolling resistance and reduced noise. They also offer better grip to handle the instant torque of electric motors.
Despite these differences, EVs can technically use traditional tires if they match the manufacturer's recommended weight load and speed rating. However, EV-specific tires are recommended for the best performance and noise reduction.
RACV's new service ensures EV owners can get help when they need it, whether it's a flat tire or another roadside issue. Moderate driving style and regular tire maintenance can maximise the lifespan of EV tires, which typically last between 25,000-40,000km.
RACV's expanded emergency roadside assist for EVs reflects the growing popularity of electric vehicles. The service caters to the specific needs of EVs, including their unique tire requirements. By offering this service, RACV supports EV owners and encourages the adoption of electric vehicles.
