Record-breaking valuation of Temasek's portfolio; assertion that potential risks from the US may have reached their zenith

Singapore's state investor, Temasek, has announced a significant shift in its investment strategy, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformative "two-decade opportunity" that could reshape multiple industries. This strategic move comes as the organisation broadens its exposure across the entire AI value chain.

Central to Temasek's AI strategy are direct investments in hyperscale computing and AI applications. Notable investments include stakes in leading chipmaker Nvidia and software company Intapp, which support the foundational technologies powering AI advancements. The organisation also ventures into early-stage venture building through entities like Aicadium and minden.ai, aiming to develop innovative AI technologies and integrate them into Temasek’s portfolio companies.

In addition, strategic partnerships have been forged with major global players, such as the AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), which includes BlackRock, Microsoft, Global Infrastructure Partners, and tech investment firm MGX. This partnership aims to invest over $30 billion initially, with a potential mobilization of up to $100 billion including debt financing, primarily focusing on expanding data centers and energy infrastructure in the US to support AI applications like ChatGPT.

Geographic and sectoral focus is another key element of Temasek’s AI strategy. The organisation targets promising AI opportunities worldwide, with a notable increase in investments in the Americas and India, regions deemed to have robust innovation ecosystems. Furthermore, Temasek is actively repositioning its portfolio, divesting from underperforming sectors to recycle capital into AI and other high-growth areas like green energy, positioning its portfolio for long-term resilience and growth in a volatile global environment.

In other news, Temasek's net portfolio value reported a year-on-year increase of 11.6%, reaching S$434 billion, as at Wednesday. The U.S. remains the largest destination for Temasek's capital, with the Americas making up 24% of its portfolio at the end of its financial year on March 31, an increase from 22% on the same date the previous year.

Temasek's chief investment officer, Rohit Sipahimalani, expressed optimism for a recovery in growth towards the end of the year, citing Fed rate cuts, deregulation, and clarity around tariffs. However, he noted the challenge in the U.S. regarding valuations and emphasised the need to remain watchful of tariff developments in the coming weeks and months.

Despite these challenges, Temasek sees bright spots in the U.S., particularly in the world-class capabilities in AI. The organisation also continues to believe in the longer-term prospects of China and sees opportunities in the green economy, life sciences innovation, and leading domestic brands.

In conclusion, Temasek's AI investment approach integrates building infrastructure capacity, supporting cutting-edge AI technology companies, and leveraging strategic alliances to capture value across hardware, software, and applications in AI, reflecting its belief in the significant and lasting transformational impact of AI technology.

Temasek's AI strategy involves not only direct investments in hyperscale computing and AI applications like Nvidia and Intapp, but also ventures into early-stage venture building through entities such as Aicadium and minden.ai, aiming to develop innovative AI technologies and integrate them into their portfolio companies.

The organization's AI approach also includes forming strategic partnerships with global players, such as the AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), to invest in expanding data centers and energy infrastructure in the US, primarily focusing on AI applications like ChatGPT.
