Romania establishes guidelines for country's national hiking trails
Romania Establishes Legal Framework for Hiking Trails of National Interest
The Romanian Government has issued a decision on July 24, 2025, regarding the methodological norms for hiking trails of national interest. This decision completes the legal framework for the certification, development, and administration of these trails [1].
Under Law no. 288/2024, adopted in November 2024, a trail can be recognized as a hiking trail of national interest if it meets specific requirements and showcases significant natural and cultural values within Romania [1].
Key points about this law and requirements include:
- The trail must be a long-distance hiking trail that highlights the country's unique natural and cultural heritage, particularly in sub-Carpathian regions [1].
- It should contribute to sustainable tourism goals, preserving and valorizing areas of natural beauty and cultural importance [1].
- The trail must be part of a legal framework supporting sustainable tourism, rural development, and conservation of cultural and natural heritage, encouraging EU funding and international cooperation [1].
The trail will have a standardized signaling system, offering a guide, including a map, visual identity elements, accommodation options, and other tourist information. It should also cover at least 70% of its length with natural and rural areas, including tourist attractions such as historical monuments, archaeological sites, protected natural areas, or UNESCO sites [1].
To receive certification, a trail of national interest must have a length of at least 500 km and cross at least eight counties, or at least 200 km if it crosses or borders UNESCO natural sites [1]. The setting up of the trails is a collaborative effort between the initiator and administrative-territorial units or intercommunity development associations [1].
Certification of a trail of national interest is granted at the request of the initiator, based on technical documentation, which includes the consent of land owners or administrators, as well as the approval of protected natural area administrators, where applicable [1]. A specially established commission will evaluate the documentation for certification [1].
The certification process involves a thorough review of the trail's compliance with the established methodological norms. Visible posts, signs, railings, or shelters will be used for safe navigation along the trails [1]. Radu Mirută, the minister of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship, and Tourism, stated that these trails can showcase Romania's places with passion and vision [1].
Until now, such initiatives have been driven more by ambition than by legal support. The decision completes the legal framework, providing a solid foundation for the development and administration of hiking trails of national interest in Romania [1].
An example of a successful project that unites the country through nature, culture, and local stories is Via Transilvanica [1]. This trail offers a unique opportunity to explore Romania's diverse landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture.

In this legal framework, technological advancements could be harnessed to create interactive maps and tourist information systems for hiking trails of national interest, enhancing visitors' experiences and sustainability efforts. Additionally, the promotion of these trails through sports events, such as marathons or cycling races, could boost their popularity and the local economy.
