Russia's Interior Ministry issues caution regarding the employment of neural networks for image manipulation
The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued a warning to its citizens, stating that editing passport photographs to enhance appearance using artificial intelligence (AI) is unacceptable. This warning comes in response to a 'life hack' that has been circulating on social media, suggesting the use of neural networks to create passport photographs.
The department encourages the use of AI for transforming any photo into a 'flawless document photo,' but stresses that this should not be applied to passport photographs. The Ministry warns that edited passport photographs could lead to the refusal of document issuance, and in such cases, the paid state duty will not be refunded.
The Ministry reiterates that the image for an identity document must meet strict standards. The use of Photoshop and similar editing tools is also prohibited for passport photographs. The Interior Ministry has requested Russian citizens to refrain from using artificial intelligence for creating passport photos.
As of eight months into the current year, around 3,900 applicants have been refused Russian Federation citizen passport issuance or replacement for various reasons, according to TASS reports. This underscores the importance of adhering to the photo requirements set by the Ministry.
The Ministry's warning serves as a reminder to all citizens to comply with the photo requirements to avoid any inconvenience or delays in the issuance or replacement of passports.
