Russia's Retail Week discussed potential advancements in technology

At the 11th International Business and Power Forum "Russian Retail Week - 2025" in Moscow, industry experts gathered to discuss key trends and strategies shaping technological innovation in retail. The focus was heavily on AI, digitalization, and enhancing consumer experience through technology integration.

The central trend discussed was the use of artificial intelligence (AI) across multiple facets of retail. AI-driven personalization, recommendation systems, and logistics optimization are crucial for engaging the predominately young, mobile Russian consumer base, who expect seamless, fast delivery and easy digital shopping journeys.

Retailers are accelerating product cycles by using AI-powered automation to reduce development and launch timelines by around 30%. This includes AI tools for automating quality assurance, mining real-time social media sentiment to guide product decisions, and generative AI for efficient design and prototyping. Such capabilities allow retailers to test multiple product variations rapidly and respond to market trends faster than ever before.

Beyond AI, the forum highlighted the importance of emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), which enhance online and in-store shopping experiences by enabling virtual try-ons and interactive engagement. Robotics and smart automation in retail environments were also noted as growing trends that improve operational efficiency and customer service.

Denis Sologub from Azbuka Vkusa constantly tests innovations in retail before they become mainstream, including cashierless stores and self-checkout cash registers. Sber, on the other hand, is developing technologies and implementing modern solutions based on GenAI, primarily to transform itself. Alexander Belokopytov shared that Sber's aim is to keep up with the current technological agenda, increase efficiency, and help partners develop their business.

Albert Gusev from SPAR aims to preserve the traditional supermarket format while improving it through new solutions. Nikita Kuznetsov from the Ministry of Industry and Trade focuses on the development of innovations that enable automation of stores and warehouses, with a goal of implementing robots on an industrial scale by 2025. Rustam Zikiriev stated that retail is one of the most technologically advanced and competitive industries.

The speakers at the session shared their views on implementing technological innovations in the retail industry. Zikiriev mentioned that the main challenge in retail is not just automating processes, but thinking ahead 3-5 years to stay competitive. He also emphasized that not all trendy technologies make practical sense for retail.

Ivan Melnik expects roboticization and AI integration to partially replace up to 30% of operations in stores and distribution centers by 2028. The expert mentioned that behind the hype of many technologies, there may be huge investments, infrastructure unpreparedness, or lack of demand from real customers.

In conclusion, the strategic emphasis in Russian retail innovation combines AI-driven personalization and supply chain management, rapid product innovation cycles through AI tools, and leveraging immersive and automated technologies to create seamless shopping experiences tailored to a digitized and demanding consumer market. The 11th International Business and Power Forum "Russian Retail Week - 2025" provided a platform for industry experts, government representatives, retailers, producers, suppliers, logistics companies, warehouse developers, retail associations, analysts, and media representatives to discuss and shape the future of retail technology in Russia.
