Samsung Braces for Potential 25% Tariff Increase on Smartphones by Trump

In the ongoing negotiations, U.S. President Donald Trump has singled out Apple Inc. for a potential 25% tariff on smartphones imported into the U.S., should the iPhones continue to be manufactured and assembled overseas, such as in India. This assertion comes after Trump expressed the desire for Apple to produce iPhones domestically. If Apple fails to comply, they could face tariffs ranging up to 25% on their devices.

Although no specific tariff plans have been announced for Samsung Electronics, the current focus is predominantly on Apple and their production countries. Analysts caution that manufacturing iPhones in the U.S. may drive up costs, potentially boosting the retail price to around $3500 per phone, compared to roughly $1000 at present.

As of May 2025, the proposed tariff plan is contingent upon iPhones not being manufactured domestically in the U.S. At this juncture, Samsung remains exempt from the tariff discussions. The tariff threat on Apple iPhones is presently the primary point of contention. As the situation unfolds, further developments regarding Samsung smartphones and potential tariffs may arise.

The ongoing tariff discussions primarily target Apple Inc., with potential 25% tariffs on imported smartphones, including iPhones, should they not be manufactured domestically. If Samsung Electronics' gadgets, such as smartphones, become part of the business negotiations within the industry, their prices might also be affected by any technology-related tariffs, similar to what analysts have projected for Apple's products.
