Samsung Reveals Timeline for Android 13 Release Across Galaxy Device Models
When Apple releases a software update for the iPhone, it's instantly accessible to everyone. Contrarily, in the Android realm, updates are reliant on specific manufacturers. For instance, Samsung didn't disclose its Android 13 update until quite recently, approximately two months after Google initially introduced it for Pixel devices. Currently, we're gatherings clues about when each device will receive its upgrade.
The Galaxy S22 series, comprising the Galaxy S22 and the Ultra, will be the initial recipients of the update in this batch. We anticipate a second wave of updates in November, targeting Samsung's last two foldable iterations, alongside the Galaxy S21, Galaxy Note 20, and Galaxy S20 series of smartphones. Samsung tablet users can also anticipate the upgrade to Android 13, with the Galaxy Tab S8 and Tab S7 series leading the charge.
The list of eligible devices was communicated via a push notification to Samsung users in Korea. It's noteworthy that these references initially concern Korean devices, although the U.S. typically follows suit shortly afterwards. Interestingly, the Galaxy S21 Fan Edition, a considerably underwhelming phone, does not feature on this list. If your device isn't listed, you might want to consider an upgrade as it could imply lower priority for your device.
Samsung's rendition of Android 13 is called One UI 5. This version offers the same functionalities as Android 13, including expanded color palette options, a new privacy dashboard, and enhanced support for varying screen sizes—particularly for tablets. Furthermore, One UI 5 includes a range of Samsung-exclusive features like Routines, customizable call backgrounds, and widget-stacking similar to iOS 16. Even Bixby is set to gain a Text Call feature next year, which allows answering calls by inputting text. Additionally, the Maintenance Mode allows for concealing personal data when sending your Samsung device for repair.
While two months might seem like a long wait for an Android 13 update on Samsung devices, you may still encounter dissatisfaction. As I mentioned earlier, Android has a rich history of software update fragmentation, and user gripes remain prevalent, even among long-term users like myself. However, this update has been rolled out more promptly given that Android 13 is relatively minor compared to previous versions.
You can now verify if your Galaxy S22 is ready for the update in the U.S. Verizon has also announced seeding Android 13 for the S22 on its network.
The advancements in technology and Samsung's tech pipeline indicate that the Galaxy S22 series will spearhead the Android 13 update, paving the way for the future of Samsung devices. With the anticipated second wave of updates in November, Samsung users can expect their Galaxy S21, Note 20, S20 series, and select tablets to receive the upgrade, further integrating modern features into their devices.
