Samsung's digital wallet has introduced an option to break up in-store purchases into multiple installments.
Samsung Wallet Introduces Installment Payments Feature
Samsung Wallet has announced the rollout of a new feature called Installment Payments, available for users nationwide in the U.S. by the end of 2025. As of July 25, the feature is already live in 21 states plus Washington D.C. [1][2][4]
The Installment Payments feature allows users to split their in-store purchases into smaller, manageable payments. This new addition to Samsung Wallet aims to make big purchases more accessible and easier to manage. [3]
Unlike most Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services that primarily cater to online shopping, Samsung's focus with Installment Payments is on in-store spending. [5]
To use this feature, users need to have devices running Android 12 or higher. The balance on the card already added to the Wallet is used for the Installment Payments, eliminating the need for any new credit or financing plan. [2]
Users can choose from four flexible plan options: six or eight biweekly payments, or six or nine monthly ones. It's important to note that users must select a plan within 24 hours after making a purchase, or they will be charged the full amount. [1][2][3]
The Installment Payments feature is powered by Splitit, a company that specialises in installment payment systems. [4]
This new feature by Samsung adds to the growing competition in the BNPL space, as other mobile wallets also offer similar features. For instance, Google has partnered with Affirm, Zip, Afterpay, and Klarna to bring installment options to Google Wallet. [6]
It's worth mentioning that the Installment Payments feature does not require a new credit check or account. It works with eligible Visa and Mastercard accounts. [7]
The rollout of Installment Payments by Samsung is currently limited to 21 states plus Washington D.C., with plans to expand across the U.S. by late 2025. [1]
When making an in-store payment with Samsung Wallet, users will see a "Pay in installments" option, providing them with another way to pay in stores, building on the Tap to Transfer feature. [2]
If a user fails to choose a plan within 24 hours, the full amount will get charged. [1]
With the Installment Payments feature, Samsung Wallet users can manage big purchases more easily, making in-store shopping more accessible and convenient.
