Improving Mobile Network Coverage: Rhineland-Palatinate Initiates Nationwide Measurement Week
Residents of Rhineland-Palatinate can contribute to enhancing mobile network coverage by participating in a nationwide mobile network measurement week, organized by the Federal Network Agency. This initiative, dubbed "Germany Checks Its Network," begins on May 26 and runs until June 1, 2025.
By using their smartphones and the app developed by zafaco GmbH, participants can record mobile network coverage in their vicinity. The data collected will be anonymously incorporated into the dead zone map of the Gigabit Land Register, aiming to improve the quality of mobile network coverage.
"These valuable data provide a more authentic representation of mobile network user experiences compared to the official figures reported by telecommunications companies," explained Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister of Digitization, Dörte Schall (SPD).
In last year's regional mobile network measurement week, over 2,800 people in Rhineland-Palatinate provided almost 1.6 million valid measurement points. Over 95% of these points indicated a supply of either 4G or 5G mobile networks. However, 2G coverage was limited to 3.2% of the measurement points, while network availability was not detected at roughly 1.7% of the points.
Such initiatives provide a means for citizens to contribute to improving mobile network coverage in their regions. While occasional events, such as the deployment of a Mobile Base Station (MRI) by Vodafone during events like the Rhineland-Palatinate Day in Neustadt/Weinstraße, can temporarily enhance coverage in specific locations, ongoing efforts like the mobile network measurement week aim to gather more comprehensive data and identify areas needing improvement.
