Self-checkout cash registers will become common starting 1st July.

Get ready to spend a few extra seconds at the self-checkout soon, because you'll be scanning special Data Matrix codes on certain items!

This new requirement is coming our way, as announced by the Ministry of Taxes and Levies (MNTL). And don't worry, BELTA has the deets.

What are these Data Matrix codes, you ask? Think of them as a more advanced version of QR codes, used to verify the authenticity of products and keep counterfeit goods off the shelves.

Already, these codes are making their appearance on a variety of products in our country, such as dairy, water, juices, oil, beer, vitamins, canned goods, footwear, perfumes, tires, and more.

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is working hard on the implementation of these unique identifiers. As MNTL put it, "This method prevents the reuse of identification marks on illegal and counterfeit goods, ensuring the legal circulation of goods and protecting consumers from purchasing fake or substandard products."

From July 1st onward, you'll need to scan these codes during checkout, self-service or otherwise. Some cash registers may even recognize the data automatically, saving you the extra effort of scanning.

Worried about remembering which items have these codes? No worries! The cash register will guide you through the process. And if you run into trouble, you can always ask for help from a consultant or use a traditional cash register with a cashier.

Now, let's talk about Data Matrix codes and their potential impact, inspired by similar technologies like QR codes.

Retailers are already using QR codes for security and compliance purposes, like helping manage inventory and preventing the sale of expired products. With Data Matrix codes, detailed product tracking and verification could be possible, making it easier to identify and prevent counterfeit products.

Consumers in EAEU countries may benefit from the increased security and convenience offered by Data Matrix codes. This potentially means purchasing real, authentic items without a second thought.

Additionally, retailers can stay compliant with regulatory requirements to ensure products meet safety and quality standards. This anti-counterfeiting measure benefits consumers by reducing the risk of purchasing shady products.

An increased transparency in the market could lead to higher consumer trust in retail systems, since the use of advanced codes like Data Matrix makes it easier to track products.

Collaboration between retailers, technology providers, and regulatory bodies will be key to seamlessly integrating Data Matrix codes into existing systems across the EAEU region, ensuring the success of this new anti-counterfeit measure.

In the future, smart-home-devices and various gadgets may integrate Data Matrix code scanning functionality, allowing users to verify the authenticity of their consumer goods, thanks to the widespread implementation of these advanced codes across various product types. As technology continues to advance, we may witness a more secure and reliable shopping experience, empowering consumers to make informed decisions about their purchases within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
