Shotguns Emerge as Practical Close-Range Drone Defense

Drones have emerged as a significant tactical threat, prompting various countermeasures at the Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition in London. Among the solutions showcased, shotguns have emerged as a close-range answer to drone threats.

Several companies, including Beretta Defense Technologies and FN Herstal, displayed their shotgun-based systems. FN Herstal offered the Winchester SX4, designed specifically for engaging small airborne targets. It comes with a drilled and tapped receiver for optic mounting, ensuring accurate targeting.

Beretta's solution, the A.I Drone Guardian, is a Benelli M4 shotgun equipped with a Steiner MPS red dot optic and Tungsten No.4 shot. It boasts an 'Advanced Auto Impact' system that enhances hit capability and penetration at longer ranges compared to standard shotguns, with an optimal range of 5 to 50 meters and the ability to engage targets up to 100 meters.

Arx Robotics also presented their shotgun-based solution for close combat scenarios at the exhibition.

While electronic warfare systems, lasers, auto cannons, and missiles were also on display, shotguns have proven to be a practical and effective close-range solution for drone threats. The Winchester SX4 and A.I Drone Guardian, in particular, offer advanced features that enhance their capabilities against unmanned aerial vehicles.
