Snapchat Introduces Storage Fees for 'Memories'
Snapchat, the renowned messaging app famed for its fleeting content, is poised to introduce a novel storage fee for users who surpass their complimentary limit. The corporation declared that it will levy charges for preserving 'Memories', a feature enabling users to archive content for subsequent sharing.
Drew Benvie, CEO of social media consultancy Battenhall, foresees that all social media platforms will ultimately emulate this practice and impose storage charges. Snapchat's action is the latest in this trend. Commencing shortly, users will incur charges if they store more than five gigabytes of content. Nevertheless, Snapchat has guaranteed users that they will have a temporary storage space for 12 months even if the complimentary limit is exceeded.
To cater to users requiring additional storage, Snapchat has unveiled two novel subscription tiers: Snapchat+ and Snapchat Platinum. Snapchat+ offers 100 gigabytes for $1.99 or 250 gigabytes for $3.99 per month. For those needing copious storage, Snapchat Platinum provides five terabytes for $15.99 per month.
Snapchat's new storage fees are part of a global rollout, with pricing in the UK yet to be divulged. This shift reflects the burgeoning demand for storage space on social media platforms and could herald a paradigm shift in how such services are financed in the future.
