In the world of gaming, Steam, Valve's platform for digital game distribution, continues to lead the market. As of the latest statistics, 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 account for around 95 percent of current Steam users. This shift towards 64-bit systems is not exclusive to Steam's user base. MacOS and Linux, too, are already 64-bit only. On the Mac, 64-bit is already the norm, while on Windows, a timely switch to a 64-bit operating system is recommended. The impending change is reflected in Steam's own operations. As of September 9, 2025, the latest version of Steam is the German version, marking a step towards a future where 64-bit Windows will be the standard. Starting from January 1, 2026, the first versions of the Steam client that run only on 64-bit Windows will be released. Until then, Steam continues to support 32-bit Windows 10, but no longer updates it after that date. It's important to note that even though no 32-bit Windows will be supported from next year, 32-bit games will continue to run on Steam. However, Core Steam functions rely on system drivers and other libraries that are not supported by 32-bit versions of Windows. This means that after the end of support for 32-bit Windows in 2026, existing installations of the Steam client may continue to function, but Valve cannot guarantee this. The Steam support for the 32-bit version will be completely discontinued. The shift towards 64-bit Windows has been a topic of discussion on the CB-Funk Podcast, a podcast that delves into various aspects of technology and gaming. In their #136 episode, hosts Jan-Frederik and Fabian discussed breaking news, FSR 4 on RDNA 3, and the 'Mouse Revolution', among other things, also touching upon the upcoming changes in Steam's support for 64-bit Windows. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, it's crucial for users to stay informed about these changes. Whether you're a casual gamer or a hardcore enthusiast, understanding the shift towards 64-bit systems can help ensure a smooth gaming experience in the future.
