Surveillance cameras and flashing notices
Safety enhancements at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach aim to protect visitors from potential hazards. The installation of warning signs, a 300-meter long chain, and blinking lights signifying danger levels are now in place. The signs have been designed to provide comprehensive and engaging information about the beach's conditions and safety procedures.
The signs include one lighting sign, three large information signs, and six guiding signs, providing visitors with crucial information about the beach's dangers and safety measures. One sign highlights the risks of the waves, and a corresponding lighting sign is linked to the Icelandic Road Administration's wave forecasting system.
Authorities emphasize the importance of heeding the warnings as the sea can appear calm while hiding potentially dangerous waves. A Yellow light indicates that people should avoid entering the designated Yellow zone, while a Red light means that entry to the Red zone or moving beyond the light signal is strictly prohibited.
The new safety installations are part of a joint initiative by a consultative group consisting of landowners, the South Iceland Police, the Icelandic Tourist Board, Landsbjörg, the Icelandic Road Administration, Katla Geopark, and Kolofon, who designed and configured the signs.
Visitors are advised to stay on higher ground for a safe view of the beach's scenic vistas. Despite the measures, there is currently no on-site management, although the need for such a service, particularly on Red-light days, has been acknowledged. A collective effort by landowners is necessary to establish funding for an on-site guard.
The objective is to enable visitors to comprehend the risks associated with Reynisfjara Beach and act accordingly, ensuring their safety while enjoying the area's splendor. While the new signs and safety measures will not deter determined visitors from approaching the water, they are essential in keeping as many people safe as possible.
