Synology Expands NAS Drive Compatibility with DSM 7.3 Update
Synology is loosening its grip on the types of storage drives compatible with its Plus-series NAS devices. The company is expanding its validation program for third-party hard drives and M.2 SSDs, and relaxing restrictions with the upcoming DSM 7.3 update.
Previously, Synology's compatibility lists were limited to its own branded drives at high prices. However, the company is now including drives from other manufacturers like Seagate and Western Digital (WD) for HDDs, following user and industry criticism. For M.2 SSDs, Synology is still vague about other brands besides its own.
The distinction between SATA SSDs and HDDs is important, Synology explains, due to the mechanical complexity of hard drives. HDDs still have restrictions, with only listed drives supported for Plus NAS models. SATA SSDs not on the compatibility list will be displayed as 'Unconfirmed' but remain usable in Plus NAS models. Additionally, 2.5-inch SATA SSDs can now be used to create storage pools directly, breaking previous limitations.
With the DSM 7.3 update, Synology is making its Plus-series NAS devices more flexible. Users now have more options for third-party hard drives and M.2 SSDs, although the company is still cautious about naming specific brands besides its own. Entry-level J and Value series NAS devices remain unrestricted for SATA SSDs and HDDs.
