Semiconductor Giant TSMC Expands European Footprint with Munich Design Center

Munich, Germany - Leading semiconductor manufacturer TSMC announced plans to establish a semiconductor design center in Munich, slated to open in Q3 of 2025. The new center will focus on developing chips for the automotive industry and other sectors in collaboration with clients. This development was disclosed by Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs, Hubert Aiwanger (Free Voters).

The Taiwanese corporation, recognized for its technologically advanced, efficient, and energy-saving chips, is also constructing a factory near Dresden, in collaboration with partner companies. Munich is home to semiconductor manufacturer Infineon, with US tech giant Apple having selected the city as the location for its European chip design center in 2021.

The new design center is expected to create high-skilled engineering and semiconductor design jobs. The ministry and TSMC have not disclosed the investment amount or the number of employees for the Munich center. Aiwanger views the establishment of the design center as a significant boost for Bavaria in the microelectronics sector.
