Tax-tech innovation flourishes as KRA's GavaConnect platform reaches over 1000 developers, marking a significant milestone.
Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Unveils GavaConnect: A Leap Forward in Tax Digitization and Collaboration
In a significant move towards digital transformation and co-creation of solutions, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled the GavaConnect Enterprise API platform. This secure, official interface provides developers, fintechs, businesses, and software vendors with direct access to KRA’s digital tax services [1][2][3].
GavaConnect marks a significant leap forward in Kenya’s tax digitization efforts, with a focus on simplifying tax compliance. By offering APIs for PIN verification, Tax Compliance Certificate checks, NIL return filing, and e-Slip verification, among others, the platform enables the integration of tax functions such as verification, filing, and payments into external apps and systems [1][3].
This first public sector platform in Kenya allows seamless integration of government tax services with private sector systems, fostering digital collaboration between KRA and over 1,000 registered developers and innovators [1][3][5]. GavaConnect supports KRA’s broader digital transformation goals, including objectives within its 9th Corporate Plan, by digitizing tax administration, making compliance faster, simpler, and more accessible for individuals and MSMEs [2][4].
The platform's expansion plans include integrations for the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) and enhanced VAT compliance tools, further simplifying business tax processes and promoting a digital tax ecosystem [1][4].
The GavaConnect Enterprise API platform has been exposed, containing 16 APIs, and over 1000 developers have registered with it. The API Masterclass, a hands-on and collaborative forum for developers, was designed to support all developers, whether on-boarding for the first time or building advanced solutions [4][5].
KRA's Deputy Commissioner for Program Delivery & Client Engagement, Ms. Annastacia Githuba, stated that GavaConnect is a significant milestone in Kenya's tax digitization agenda. She emphasized KRA's commitment to partnerships with the tech developer community as part of its larger digital transformation agenda [6].
By opening up to the wider tech community and aiming to improve services from the ground up through collaboration and innovation, KRA demonstrates its dedication to digital transformation and co-creation of solutions. The API Masterclass series is a concrete step towards KRA's goal of co-designing the future of tax administration with Kenya’s tech community [5].
