In a groundbreaking move, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang, alongside UK Labour Party Leader, Keir Starmer, have set the stage for a bold AI revolution at London Tech Week. Their ambitious plan aims to transform Britain into a leading "AI maker," not just a "taker."

Touting partnerships with major British corporations such as BAE Systems, BT, Babcock, National Grid, and Standard Chartered, Nvidia launched the UK's first sovereign AI industry forum. This collaboration promises to supercharge domestic computing capabilities by a staggering 20 times, with a £1.5bn investment in the booming AI startup ecosystem.

"This is a monumental endorsement for the UK," proclaimed Prime Minister Keir Starmer, kicking off London Tech Week. "We're truly seizing this opportunity and are excited about the positive impact it could and will have on millions of people."

Starmer emphasized the broader societal implications of this technology, noting that AI and technology can make us more human, making a significant difference for working people. The potential applications are far-reaching, from expediting crucial areas like hospitals and education to enhancing public services.

A Computing Boom

Addressing the forum, Nvidia's Jensen Huang underscored the importance of the UK's academic strength, startup ecosystem, and research institutions, citing the country as "one of the richest AI communities globally." Huang stated, "The UK is missing one thing - it's lacking infrastructure. That's why Keir Starmer's announcement of increased computing investment in the UK is so crucial."

The UK shines as the leading destination for AI investment in Europe, with over $28bn in private investment poured into the sector since 2013. Recent analyses by Public First revealed that expanding data center capacity could drive faster economic growth and contribute up to £36.5bn annually to the national economy.

Cloud providers Nscale and Nebius announced new UK-based deployments, committing to installing a combined total of 14,000 of Nvidia's latest GPUs, with applications spanning various industries like research and public services.

Skills Development and Public Sector Integration

Aligning with the government's skills agenda, Nvidia will establish a new AI technology center in the UK, investing £185m into educational training at school and university levels. This center will offer programs focused on AI, data sciences, and accelerated computing, concentrating on areas like foundation models and climate modeling.

Prime Minister Starmer highlighted that this investment will foster a sea change in the amount of homegrown talent available. The government aims to train up to one million young people through a new tech-first training program.

In financial services, the Financial Conduct Authority unveiled an AI-powered 'digital sandbox,' allowing for safe testing of new technologies. Meanwhile, Barclays Eagle Labs declared an innovation hub focused on AI and deep tech startups, with Nvidia's 'Inception' program offering support through tools and training.

UK universities stand at the heart of this comprehensive strategy. The JADE consortium, a collaborative effort between Oxford University, the Turing Institute, and 20 other institutions, is leveraging Nvidia technologies for AI development and safety research. Exciting projects include a digital twin of the human body at University College London, the Isambard-AI supercomputer at the University of Bristol, and pollution-modelling systems at the University of Manchester.

Huang shared his confidence in the UK's potential, stating, "The UK is a fantastic place to invest. Infrastructure enables more research, more research leads to more breakthroughs, and breakthroughs lead to more companies."

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology expressed its collaboration with Nvidia to expand AI-related telecoms research, making tools and training accessible to leading UK universities. Several British corporations are already capitalizing on Nvidia's platforms in commercial applications.

Starmer commended the tech sector for its role in shaping Britain's future economy, emphasizing the importance of harnessing the power of this technology. With the industry supporting over 2 million jobs, this technological push could unlock endless opportunities for Britain's digital future.
