Tesla's Giga Texas Factory Automates Vehicle Transportation with Autonomous Driving
Tesla's Giga Texas factory is pushing the boundaries of automation, as the company leverages its autonomous vehicle technology to transport freshly produced Model Y and Cybertruck vehicles from the production line to sorting lanes.
The self-driving route for Model Y vehicles is approximately two miles long and includes going under a bridge and around the south side of the plant. Drone footage posted by Joe Tegtmeyer shows Model Y vehicles driving themselves from the production line to sorting lanes, indicating a system of self-driving vehicles for internal logistics within the factory yard.
The outbound lot is busy with vehicles undergoing final testing and being loaded automatically onto transport trucks. The factory has produced 400,000 Model Y vehicles since its opening three years ago, and it seems that the autonomous transportation system is a key factor in maintaining efficiency.
Some Cybertrucks were also observed in action at Tesla's Giga Texas factory. While some followed the same path as the Model Y vehicles, others were seen exiting the "Cybertunnel," a part of Tesla's Giga Texas factory where Cybertrucks are produced or stored. It's unclear whether these self-driving Cybertrucks were new production units or temporary storage vehicles with human drivers.
In addition to the self-driving vehicles, construction is progressing at Megapack installation area #2. Approximately two-thirds of the Megapacks are already in place, mounted on steel beams. Wiring work is expected to begin soon to connect the Megapacks to transformers, and an official Tesla video showcasing the Megapack work may be coming soon.
Crews are also preparing the area for expansion by raising the land and clearing out remnants of the old mining pits. The new drainage pipe is being extended to a future water detention pond, suggesting that the factory is preparing for further growth.
The Giga Texas factory has extended its work hours and equipped with new automation machinery to increase production throughput. A Tesla drone team was spotted filming the progress of the Megapack work, providing a glimpse into the ongoing developments at the factory.
