Tesla announces no regulatory obstacles preventing the rollout of its Full Self-Driving feature in Australia
Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) Set to Launch in Australia
Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) is expected to be available for Australian owners soon, with a phased rollout beginning in the near future. The company has confirmed that there are no regulatory blockers in Australia, and they are currently in the final stages of validation before public release.
The rollout will start with vehicles equipped with Hardware 4 (HW4), which have been standard in Australian deliveries since late 2023 for Model 3 and 2024 for Model Y vehicles. Local authorities have cleared regulatory hurdles, and Tesla is working through final local road testing and validation before launching.
Initial testing videos have shown FSD Supervised driving on Australian roads in cities like Sydney and Melbourne, demonstrating practical use in the local road environment. While no official exact release date has been announced, industry speculation and Tesla communications suggest that public availability is likely within months following August 2025.
The demonstration in Melbourne's urban core marked the company's first public test in a right-hand drive market. Tesla's FSD approach differs from other companies like Waymo, as it relies on a vision-only system powered by neural networks instead of high-definition maps and geofenced areas. This vision-only system enables FSD to scale to new markets without pre-mapping, making it possible for Tesla to bring FSD to Australia with relatively minimal groundwork.
The system was tested in various local traffic conditions, including cyclists, pedestrians, and the unique "hook turn," a maneuver specific to Melbourne. Local viewers on X praised the demonstration, highlighting the potential benefits of FSD for Australian drivers.
Tesla's Country Director for Australia & New Zealand, Thom Drew, confirmed the update to local media. The company is actively working across markets, including Australia, to refine the FSD system. Local testing will continue as Tesla fine-tunes the system to suit Australian driving environments.
Once the system is fine-tuned, the supervised version of FSD could be made available to Australian customers. It's worth noting that Tesla is offering three months of Full Self-Driving (FSD) to new customers who use a referral link, if they enjoy the content and find it helpful in their decision to buy a Tesla.
The lack of regulatory barriers in Australia is a significant milestone for the rollout of FSD in the country. Tesla's FSD (Supervised) is currently priced at AU$10,100 in Australia, making it one of the more affordable markets for the software globally.
