Tesla's Troubles Escalate
Elon Musk-led electric vehicle powerhouse, Tesla, is grappling with a global sales slump, and it's not spared France. shocking drop of 44% in registrations since the beginning of 2025, with 7,556 vehicles sold. To make matters worse, the recent price increase on May 1 is unlikely to uplift the situation. According to Numerama, Tesla's Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X have increased by around 330 euros in France due to a new cost—the registration card.
Previously exempt from regional taxes, low-emission vehicles (electric, hydrogen, or both) were exempt from this cost. However, the new 2025 finance law has changed the regulations, as almost all French regions have stopped the exemption of the registration certificate for electric vehicles since early May, with the exception of Hauts-de-France, which maintains the free registration card, while others charge up to 60 euros per horsepower.
Hauts-de-France: The Free Registration Card Haven
Owners of electric vehicles in France, take note: the Hauts-de-France region is the only place where the registration card remains free. Tesla acknowledges the current system is temporary, as they are planning a "dynamic price adjustment" to ensure that the registration card fee aligns with the buyers' respective regions' fees—although the timeline for implementing this update is still not known.
