Tesla Plans to Alter Tower Design in Response to Issues Encountered
The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating door lock issues with the 2021 Model Y produced by Tesla. This investigation follows criticism and regulatory investigations regarding the accessibility of Tesla's electric vehicles in emergency situations.
The investigation focuses solely on the 2021 Model Y, as other Tesla models are not involved. The concern arises from reports of difficulties in reaching occupants during vehicle fires, as well as instances where parents were unable to open doors to retrieve children from the back seat.
In an effort to address these concerns, Tesla is making changes to its design. According to Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla's chief designer, these changes aim to make doors more intuitive to open in panic situations. The new design will combine electronic and mechanical locking mechanisms in one button, making it easier for emergency responders to access the vehicle.
Under normal circumstances, doors are opened electrically. However, in the event of a power failure, occupants must find and use mechanical door openers. These mechanical door openers can be levers or cords and their locations vary from model to model, often being hidden behind door panels or under seats.
The NHTSA has highlighted that Tesla vehicles have a separate power circuit with their own battery for windows, doors, and the touchscreen. However, initial findings suggest that the door locks not receiving power is the cause of the problems.
Tesla has designed several million-selling models with hidden exterior door handles and an interior button for opening. This design has been criticised for its complexity in emergency situations. In response, Tesla is modifying its electric vehicles to make doors more easily accessible.
The modifications are a response to the ongoing investigation by the NHTSA. The investigation is expected to continue, with further findings to be released by the NHTSA. These changes will be discussed in a podcast by financial services Bloomberg.
Despite the challenges, Tesla remains committed to safety and improving the accessibility of its electric vehicles in emergency situations. The changes are a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of all Tesla users.
