Tesla Trials Robotaxi Operations Among Employees in Two Urban Centers
Tesla Launches Supervised Ride-Hailing Service as Step Towards Robotaxi Platform
Tesla has taken a significant step towards its vision of a fully autonomous robotaxi platform with the launch of a supervised ride-hailing service in Austin, Texas, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The service, currently available only to a select group of Tesla employees, is designed to test and refine the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology and related systems.
Once in the car, users put on their seatbelts and tap the 'Start Ride' button on the rear touchscreen to begin the ride. The rear screen displays the destination address and arrival time during the journey. To use the service, users order a ride in the Tesla app, and a car comes to pick them up.
The service plays a crucial role in the company's gradual rollout of its full robotaxi platform. In Austin, Tesla’s robotaxis have a human monitor seated in the front passenger seat, while in the Bay Area, these monitors occupy the driver's seat. These safety drivers can take immediate control using steering and brakes, making the service more akin to a supervised ride-hail than a fully autonomous taxi.
Tesla's FSD Supervised ride-hailing service is testing key components of its future robotaxi platform. These include the hardware version 4, which provides the necessary sensors and computational power for autonomous driving. The company is also integrating its Robotaxi FSD software into the FSD Supervised builds, initially tested on the fleet used by Tesla employees.
The service operates within specific geofenced areas, with defined boundaries that have been expanded conservatively in Austin and are planned for large parts of the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Marin, East Bay, and down to San Jose. Tesla conducts these pilot operations with safety drivers as it pursues regulatory approvals for fully driverless deployments.
The company is expanding the service area gradually, emphasizing safety and aiming to increase geofence coverage significantly while working with regulators across multiple states to enable wider autonomous ride-hailing access by year-end. The service is instrumental in the development and validation of FSD networks, the mobile app, vehicle allocation, mission control, and remote assistance operations.
The service was announced by Tesla on Wednesday and has already completed over 1,500 trips and driven over 15,000 miles since its launch. The video from Tesla showcases the FSD Supervised ride-hailing service in action. During Tesla's Q1 earnings call, the company announced that its robotaxi service is on schedule to launch in Austin, Texas, in June.
