Tesla's Full Self-Driving Software navigates toll booths akin to a human [VIDEO]
Tesla's Full Self-Driving System Demonstrates Toll Booth Navigation
Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system has shown its capabilities in handling toll booths, as demonstrated in a recent video shared by Tesla community member @DirtyTesLa. The FSD system, currently in Beta version 13.2.9, can decelerate and position the vehicle correctly within the designated toll lane as it approaches.
In a scenario without a physical gate where the driver must pay or interact, the FSD system pauses and waits for the driver to complete the interaction before it resumes driving. After the human driver handles the toll transaction, the FSD system detects the completion of this interaction and then resumes driving.
Tesla's Vice President of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, explained that the vehicle's repeater and pillar cameras visually monitor transactions at toll booths. The system uses a combination of its sensors and internal logic to determine that the required manual interaction at the toll booth has finished, allowing the vehicle to proceed automatically again.
The FSD system's behavior at the toll booth was witnessed by @WifeDirtyTesla, who was also in the car during the interaction. After the toll booth interaction was complete, the Tesla resumed driving through the park, as @WifeDirtyTesla stated.
Tesla's FSD has been making strides in recent times, outperforming competing ADAS systems from Chinese automakers in independent crash-avoidance testing. The company is also testing software for its Robotaxi fleet in Austin, with advancements expected to be rolled out to public builds in the coming months. This suggests that the improvements from the Robotaxi fleet testing will trickle down to public builds, further enhancing the FSD system's capabilities.
It is worth noting that Tesla has not yet received regulatory approval for FSD in Europe. However, Tesla demonstrated FSD Supervised handling complex city driving in London and Madrid, awaiting regulatory approval in Europe. As Tesla continuously updates FSD capabilities, including handling such edge cases and improving driver supervision and interaction detection, the functionality is expected to become more seamless over time.
The video of the Tesla's behavior at the toll booth can be found online for those interested in seeing the system in action.
Technology plays a significant role in Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, enabling it to navigate toll booths and perform automated transactions. This technology utilizes a combination of cameras and internal logic to detect human interaction at toll booths and adjust its actions accordingly.
