Tesla Unveils Longer-Range Model 3+ and Model Y L for the Chinese Market

Tesla, the American electric vehicle giant, has made a significant move by introducing two new variants of its popular models - the Model 3+ and the Model Y L - in the Chinese market.

The Tesla Model 3 is equipped with a 78.4 kWh ternary Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery pack from LG Energy Solution, powering a single rear-wheel-drive motor rated at 225 kW. It boasts a range of up to 830 km (about 515 miles) according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, making it the longest-range Model 3 variant to date.

On the other hand, the Tesla Model Y L is a six-seater, dual-motor SUV with an 82 kWh ternary NMC battery pack from LG. It has a combined motor output of 340 kW (142 kW front, 198 kW rear) and a range of 751 km (according to the CLTC measure). The Model Y L has a longer wheelbase (3040 mm) and measures 4976 mm in length.

Regarding the launch timeline, both models have been approved for the Chinese market and are expected to be introduced soon. However, no exact launch dates have been specified yet. The Model Y L, with vehicle model number TSL6500BEVBA0, has already been listed in the MIIT regulatory catalog, indicating an imminent launch in China this fall.

Battery Sources and Current Availability

The battery cells for both models are supplied by South Korea's LG Energy Solution. The Model 3 variant is currently available in three variants in China, with starting prices ranging from RMB 235,500 to RMB 339,500. The rear-wheel drive version is equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from CATL, while the other two variants use ternary batteries from LG Energy Solution.

The Model Y L, however, is not currently available in any variants in China.

Potential Impact on Chinese EV Market

The entry of these new models could potentially affect Chinese electric vehicle companies such as Li Auto and Nio, as they compete in the same market segment.

In summary, Tesla's new Model 3+ and Model Y L offer longer ranges and more seating options for the Chinese market. The Model 3+ is the longest-range Model 3 variant to date, while the Model Y L is a larger, longer-range 6-seat Model Y variant. Both models are expected to launch in China later this year.
