Thailand Upgrades Major Rail Lines with Hitachi's ETCS Digital Signalling

Thailand is upgrading two major railway lines with European Train Control System (ETCS) digital signalling. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is refurbishing and upgrading mainline railways, with ETCS as the chosen national train control system. Hitachi Rail has been awarded the contract for these projects, totalling 780.7 km.

The Northeast Line from Nong Waeng Rai to Nong Phok and the North Line from Den Chai to Ngao will benefit from Hitachi Rail's ETCS Level 1 system. This technology enhances speed, reliability, and safety by using trackside signals to communicate with the train and monitor its movement and speed limit. It also enables trains to travel at greater speeds and increase capacity on the track.

Hitachi Rail's Vice President of Mainline Signalling, Hannes Boyer, expressed pride in the company's role in improving safety on Thailand's rail network. He stated, 'We are proud to enhance safety on Thailand's rail network.' Additionally, three vehicles will be equipped with the ETCS system.

These upgrades are part of Thailand's long-term double-track development programme to improve intercity rail connections. Hitachi Rail is the main supplier for ETCS in the first phase of the nationwide expansion project, covering seven routes. The SRT's commitment to modernising its infrastructure is expected to boost safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort.
