The creation of a new Chrono Trigger game appears increasingly likely, as its originator has expressed his desire to work on a project following a recent translation error controversy.

It's been quite a rollercoaster ride for Chrono Trigger fanatics this year. A whiff of a potential remake has been in the air, only to be dashed by the cold winds of reality every time. And who could blame the fans? It sure is peculiar that Square Enix hasn't dabbled much with the Chrono series in such a long while. However, the publisher did hint in March that they plan to honor the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger with projects that "step beyond the realm of the game itself."

JRPG maestro Yuji Horii, who's no stranger to games like Chrono Trigger, as well as countless Dragon Quest installments including the forthcoming Dragon Quest 12, has shown his enthusiasm for revisiting the Chrono franchise. In an interview with Gamereactor, Horii stated, "Yes, it's been a while. Yes, I want to do something." He went on to mention that he's "getting a boatload of requests for a Chrono Trigger remake, so I'm taking a gander at it."

This latest flare-up follows a rumor that quickly fizzled out earlier this month. At a Comicon in Italy, a translator misjudged Horii's words, leading many to believe he'd all but confirmed a Chrono Trigger remake. But fear not, dear readers, Gematsu later debunked this rumor, revealing it to be a mere slip of the translator's tongue.

An HD-2D remake seems like a no-brainer, but there's a teeny-tiny part of me hoping for Chrono Trigger to get the Final Fantasy 7 Remake treatment. Given the current market's erratic behavior and Square Enix's infamous high sales expectations, that dream seems like a reach, let's be real. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D did impressively well for Square Enix, to the extent that they were ecstatic with its sales, so it seems inevitable they'll up the ante on this remake format. As long as they leave the music alone, I'm cool with that.

Now, whatever form it takes, it seems like a revival of sorts for Chrono Trigger is all but inevitable at this point. In the meantime, the original game is currently 50% off on Steam, and surprisingly, it runs smoothly despite its rocky start at launch. Its sequel, Chrono Cross, is also dirt cheap.
