The standout feature of One UI 8 for the Galaxy Watch 8 is its Watch Tiles
In a move to improve the smartwatch experience, Samsung has introduced the One UI 8 Watch Tiles on its latest Galaxy Watch 8 series. This innovative system offers a range of features designed to make smartwatch usage more efficient and engaging.
The new Tiles system allows users to customise their watch faces, incorporating relevant metrics such as cycle tracking, medications, or body composition data. This customisation has been well-received, making users more likely to utilise apps that were previously ignored due to a lack of Tile slots and an overwhelming app drawer.
The Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, in particular, takes a step forward with the Ultra template, incorporating a rotating bezel, creating a new look that is surprisingly attractive in person. This variant also benefits from the upside of the new Exynos chip, upgraded health sensors, GPS, and a new shortcut button, making it an appealing choice for fans of the Watch 6 Classic.
The Tiles on the Galaxy Watch 8 series resemble the Apple Watch smart stack but offer Android's trademark customisation and the ability to group them into smaller, themed categories. Users can choose to give an important app a "full" Tile space or group other apps below it. The system also displays hints of additional data below the Tiles, allowing for efficient use of watch display space.
One notable Tile is the "Health" Tile, which includes daily goals, Energy score, Sleep data, Breathing exercises, ECGs, antioxidant index, and blood oxygen data. The "Fitness" Tile includes top activities for a quick workout start, the Running Coach, body composition data, and Together friend challenges.
Google's Wear OS 6 Tiles also offer unique features, boasting cross-platform compatibility and a large app ecosystem. While Samsung's One UI 8 Watch is tailored specifically for Samsung devices, Wear OS 6 offers compatibility with a wide range of devices from different manufacturers, providing a more universal experience.
Both systems offer customisation options, but Samsung's focus on integration with its own ecosystem might provide a more streamlined experience for Samsung users. The choice between these systems depends on your existing ecosystem preferences and the specific features that matter most to you.
In comparison, Google's UI on the Pixel Watch 4 is more self-contained, designed with the Material 3 Expressive aesthetic as inspiration. Google and third-party apps on the Galaxy Watch 8 series have traditional, full-Tile layouts and do not have the option for multi-app Tiles. Each Samsung app on the Galaxy Watch 8 series has two Tile options: a narrower oblong designed to fit two per display space, or a taller squircle that uses most of the space but leaves room for additional data.
The One UI 8 Watch Tiles feature will come to other Galaxy Watches later this year. This update is set to revolutionise the smartwatch experience for Samsung users, offering a more personalised and efficient way to interact with their devices.
Users can customize their watch faces on the Galaxy Watch 8 series using the new Tiles system, incorporating various metrics and apps, making it more likely for users to engage with apps that were previously ignored due to limited Tile slots and an overwhelming app drawer. The new Tiles system also offers a more efficient use of watch display space by displaying hints of additional data below the tiles.
