The VW ID.4 will assume the role of the senior sibling among the ID models from the year 2026 onwards.

The Volkswagen ID.4, the brand's most successful electric vehicle to date, is set to undergo a significant transformation in 2026. This update will not just be a facelift, but a complete overhaul, making the ID.4 essentially a new generation.

Thomas Schäfer, Volkswagen's brand chief, announced that the new ID.4 for 2026 will be "really beautiful" and "completely overhauled inside and out." The redesigned ID.4 will align with Volkswagen's new design language for its electric cars, moving closer in appearance to the brand's regular models.

The updated ID.4 will also align with the ID. Cross Concept, a new model set to hit the market next year. This alignment is significant, as Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen's Head of Design, has stated that the ID.4 will be the "big brother" of the ID. Cross.

In terms of sales, Volkswagen aims to keep demand for the electric equivalent of the Tiguan high with this update. The ID.4 could potentially be offered as ID. Tiguan in the future.

However, the coupé version of the ID.4, the ID.5, is likely to be discontinued. This decision is part of Volkswagen's strategy to focus on SUVs and crossovers in the electric vehicle market.

Meanwhile, the compact ID.3 will also undergo a comprehensive overhaul, but details are yet to be revealed. No technical details about the facelift of the ID.3 and ID.4 have been announced yet.

Kai Grünitz, the brand's development chief, revealed that the interior of the new ID.4 will also be extensively overhauled, including the reintroduction of physical buttons and knobs. This shift is aimed at providing a more user-friendly experience for the drivers.

Andreas Mindt, responsible for the redesign of the VW ID.5, hinted that Volkswagen will move away from the very short front ends of its first pure electric models, particularly the ID.3, in future updates. However, it's unclear if this will happen in the next one.

The ID family of electric cars is moving towards a more conventional look, distancing itself from the futuristic designs of its initial models. This move is expected to make the ID cars more appealing to a wider audience.

The ID.4 mid-size SUV, introduced in 2020, is set to hit the market later in 2026. With its extensive overhaul, the ID.4 is expected to maintain its position as Volkswagen's most important electric vehicle in terms of sales and compete effectively in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
