THW Bavaria Celebrates 75 Years of Civil Defence and Disaster Relief
The Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) of Bavaria is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Established on August 22, 1950, the organisation has evolved over time, expanding its role in civil defence and disaster control. Initially founded to protect the population from war effects and clear post-WWII debris, the THW has adapted its focus. It now supports federal states in disaster control and has expanded emergency supply and restoration competencies. Last year, THW Bavaria volunteers tirelessly served during the 'Orinoco' flood disaster in southern Bavaria. Their efforts were also crucial in the Ahr Valley flood disaster of 2021. The organisation's commitment extends beyond Germany. In 2023, Bavarian THW forces provided technical assistance in Slovenia and Turkey following a severe earthquake. The invasion of Russia into Ukraine has further highlighted the importance of the THW's civil defence capabilities. To mark its 75th anniversary, the Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a reception for around 350 THW members in Munich. The THW in Bavaria, with approximately 16,000 volunteers, continues to dedicate its free time to protect the population, demonstrating its enduring commitment to service and community.
