Tia Shenton, a rising star in the broadcast technology field, has been honoured with the Royal Television Society (RTS) Young Technologist of the Year Award. The prestigious recognition was given in memory of A.M Beresford-Cooke and aims to advance education in television-related fields.
Shenton, a broadcast engineer at Techex, began her career as a degree apprentice at Channel 4, where she was nurtured and encouraged to explore her curiosity. Her hard work and dedication paid off when she was instrumental in creating and supporting a simulcast stream of the UK General Election, reaching over 750,000 viewers.
The decision to award Shenton was made by a panel of industry experts, chaired by Digital Media Consultant, Terry Marsh. Marsh praised Shenton's rare mix of engineering skills, creativity, and initiative, which have made her a valuable asset in the industry.
Shenton expressed her gratitude towards the RTS and the panel of judges for recognising her work in live broadcast innovations, major industry events, and accessibility projects. As the winner, she will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to IBC 2025.
Sean Jones, a broadcast engineer apprentice at Channel 4, was the runner-up and recipient of the Coffey Award for Excellence in Technology 2025. Shenton thanked her team at Channel 4 for pushing her throughout her degree apprenticeship and helping her reach new heights in her career.
Shenton also mentioned her new role at Techex and her hopes to grow further and contribute to the industry's future. She has already made a significant impact in the field, coordinating deployments across major events such as Formula E, MPTS 2024, and IBC 2025. She has also spoken at SMPTE's 2024 Young Innovators session.
Growing up in the creative world of production, Shenton was familiar with the RTS and its work. She expressed pride in receiving a technology-focused award from the RTS and looks forward to continuing to push the boundaries of broadcast technology in the future.
