Yay, it's Friday! The first weekend of 2025 is here and the weather is stunning. A little too stunning, if you ask me. I went hiking on Thursday in workout shorts and a tank-top. That's rare for January in the mountains, no? Not a flake of snow in sight. A bit concerning, but who's complaining?

Anyway, let's get to the Wordle. It's 2XP Friday, so score twice as many points, whether they're positive or negative. Let's give it a shot!

My first guess, CRATE, was spot-on, leaving me with only 12 possible solutions, two yellow boxes, and one green. I thought about guessing a word with all new letters but then decided, "Why not just try for it in two?" I guessed CHEAP because I had a hunch that the E and A would be together. Wordle Bot told me later that CAMEL would have been a better guess, but a win's a win, right? CHEAP was the Wordle!

Competitive Wordle Score

I earned 2 points for guessing in two attempts and an additional 1 point for beating the Bot, who needed three tries today. That's 3 points in total. And since it's 2XP Friday, I get 6 points in all!

How to Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in one try earns 3 points; guessing in two attempts yields 2 points; guessing in three tries nets 1 point; guessing in four attempts means no points; guessing in five attempts takes away 1 point; guessing in six attempts takes away 2 points, and missing the Wordle results in a 3-point loss.
  • If you win against your opponent, you gain 1 point. If it's a tie, you gain 0 points. If you lose, you lose 1 point. Add your points to get your total score. Keep a daily running score or play for a fresh score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—good or bad.
  • Feel free to maintain a running tally or to play daily for a new score. Enjoy!

Today's Wordle Origin

The word "cheap" comes from the Old English "ceap", meaning "trade, bargain, or purchase." This word stemmed from the Proto-Germanic "*kaupō" which referred to trading or buying. The term also connected to the Latin "caupo," meaning "merchant" or "innkeeper."

Over time, "cheap" came to describe goods that were affordable and, by the 16th century, it gained its contemporary meaning of "inexpensive" or "low in cost or quality."
