Nvidia has made a significant mark in the AI world, setting new records in natural language processing (NLP) and solar power potential analysis.

The tech giant has trained BERT, one of the world's most advanced NLP models, in a record-breaking 53 minutes using its AI platform. This impressive feat improved BERT's ability to make inferences to a record-breaking two milliseconds. Nvidia has also released its BERT training code and a sample of the optimized BERT model, making it easier for others to replicate these results.

Meanwhile, researchers from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Microsoft have developed an AI system that can automatically identify a roof's solar power potential from satellite imagery. The system, which incorporates solar irradiance data, achieves 91 percent accuracy in its estimates. It also determines the geometry of roofs to figure out how many solar panels can fit on a roof.

In another exciting development, a team consisting of Facebook, Deepmind, the University of Washington, and New York University has developed SuperGLUE. This collection of benchmark tasks tests the capabilities of AI systems to perform various NLP tasks, such as understanding reason, cause and effect, and answering yes or no questions.

Elsewhere, researchers from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, multiple UK universities, and the Natural History Museum London have developed an AI system that proved butterfly species co-evolve similar wing patterns for mutual benefit. This finding supports the concept known as mimicry theory.

On the public health front, researchers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology have developed DrugTracker, a machine-learning tool that analyses data from platforms like Twitter and Reddit to monitor where drug abuse is occurring. DrugTracker flags hundreds of relevant posts per day for counsellors and clinicians to decide where and how to best allocate their resources.

These advancements demonstrate the potential of AI to revolutionise various sectors, from renewable energy to public health, and to push the boundaries of what is possible in natural language processing.
