Trump commends Musk for extensive overhauls and cost reductions

U.S. President Donald Trump has applauded tech mogul Elon Musk for his efforts as a cost-cutter for the government, deeming his work as the most extensive reform initiative in decades. During a joint appearance at the White House, Trump declared that Musk had saved the government billions, instigated sweeping changes, and brought together numerous intellectual minds for his cost-cutting committee.

"The amount saved will continue to grow," Trump asserted, citing reductions in wasteful spending and prevention of fraud and abuse. Trump attributed these accomplishments to Musk and expressed gratitude on behalf of the American people.

In the Oval Office, Trump expressed confidence in Musk's continued involvement in politics, stating, "He'll be back." The president further mentioned Musk's affection for Dogecoin, claiming, "Doge is his baby."

Musk concurred, expressing his ambition for his team to become more potent over time and exert greater influence. He also expressed his desire to maintain his role as an advisor to the president, saying, "I expect to continue offering advice whenever the president desires it."

Musk had earlier underscored that his involvement with the government was winding down, following U.S. rules limiting his tenure as a "special government employee" to 130 days. His diminishing role as a Trump advisor had been observed for weeks, with Musk planning to shift his focus to Tesla, his electric car company.

As Musk's profile in Washington rose, some critics found his actions unpalatable, including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who accused Musk of endangering millions of children in low-income countries. Musk had previously boasted about streamlining the U.S. development aid organization USAID, likening it to a "woodchipper."

While the figure of $160 billion in savings attributed to Musk is a subject of debate, with critics suggesting it may be a mere fraction of that amount, Musk has adjusted his goal, aiming to now save at least $1 trillion.

Musk's support for Trump has been substantial, having contributed more than $250 million to his 2024 re-election campaign, earning him a trusted position within the Republican party. During Trump's second term, Musk was a frequent presence by the president's side.
