The Presidential Complex in Ankara is set to host a significant cultural event, marking the first time an archaeology-focused program has been held at the site in the history of the Turkish Republic [1]. The event, titled "The Golden Age of Archaeology," will feature a six-month exhibition showcasing over 150 rare Anatolian artifacts, with more than 80% of them being displayed publicly for the first time [2][4].

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the long-awaited return of the bronze statue of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. This 2,000-year-old masterpiece represents one of Anatolia’s finest examples of bronze sculpture. Illegally excavated in the 1960s, the statue was subsequently trafficked abroad and has resided in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio. Its return to Turkey and public display symbolise a historic reunion of the artifact with its homeland [1][4].

The statue's return was made possible through a collaborative effort involving Turkey's Culture Ministry, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, and U.S. Homeland Security Investigations, and it was officially returned to Turkey this April, 65 years after it was smuggled abroad [6].

Other notable exhibits include a 3,500-year-old clay tablet unearthed in Hatay, a Neolithic-era bowl from Karahantepe described as a discovery of the century, a rare silver coin of Orhan Gazi from Karacahisar Castle, and a millennium-old set of perfume bottles recovered from the Mediterranean off Antalya [2][4].

The exhibition will also feature the detailed Scylla head from Laodicea, depicting a mythological sea creature, and Roman-era Kybele statue and sphinx from Gordion [2].

In addition to the exhibition, the International Archaeology Symposium will gather over 250 scholars, including 29 international experts, to discuss the artistic and historical significance of the displayed artifacts and Türkiye’s leading role in global archaeological research [1][2][3].

Minister Ersoy emphasized that the dual event is a strategic declaration of Turkey's cultural leadership [3][5]. The event is seen as a demonstration of Turkey establishing cultural sovereignty and shifting from being a country that only collects artifacts to one that produces meaning, sets narratives, and exports culture [1][2][3].

This event is significant because it: - Symbolizes Turkey's assertion of cultural sovereignty and historical identity. - Marks the return and public display of a rare, historically important bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius. - Showcases numerous newly revealed ancient Anatolian artifacts. - Brings together leading international archaeological scholars to enhance global understanding of Turkey's heritage. - Demonstrates Turkey's evolution from artifact collector to global cultural influencer and producer of archaeological knowledge.
