Uber accelerates its progress in the autonomous taxis competition
Two technology titans, Uber and Baidu, have joined forces in a partnership that promises to shape the future of mobility. This collaboration, set to deploy in Asia and the Middle East this year, will bring together Uber's extensive ride-hailing network and operational expertise with Baidu's leading autonomous driving technology.
The partnership, one of the most significant yet in terms of the potential scale of Uber's robotaxi services, will see Apollo Go vehicles, Baidu's sixth-generation autonomous vehicles, being added to Uber's ride-hailing app. This integration will enable Uber users worldwide to hail fully driverless robotaxis directly through the Uber app.
The initial deployments will take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, as well as Singapore and Malaysia. Baidu is also reportedly preparing to enter markets such as Switzerland, signalling an intent to extend the service into Europe in the near future.
This partnership is positioned as one of the largest autonomous mobility rollouts globally, significantly scaling Baidu’s Apollo Go presence and extending Uber's leadership in autonomous ride services. The collaboration aims to leverage Uber's global mobility platform for rapid scale and more affordable autonomous shared rides.
It's important to note that the sector of robotaxi rides is still in the early stages of development and deployment. Local regulators have the final say on a broader rollout, and the future of robotaxi rides remains promising with a number of limited services now running in cities around the world.
This partnership comes after Uber's autonomous-vehicle testing program was suspended following an accident in Arizona in 2018. However, the company closed down its autonomous-vehicle unit in May 2020. Baidu's Apollo Go robotaxis have been tested in several Chinese cities since 2019.
Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, has stated his belief that the partnership will help shape the future of mobility. Baidu's chief, Robin Li, considers the partnership a major milestone in deploying their technology on a global scale.

The partnership between Uber and Baidu, two tech titans, will expand their services in sectors such as finance, as they plan to monetize the robotaxi services through the integration of Apollo Go vehicles into Uber's ride-hailing app. This move is also expected to impact the transportation industry, as autonomous driving technology advances are expected to reduce transportation costs and increase mobility efficiency.
