UFC Criticized for Overlooking Popular Heavyweight in Squad Downsizing
Since June 2024, the UFC has seen a significant shift in its heavyweight division, with multiple fighters being cut or having their contracts not renewed. With Don'Tale Mayes' recent loss, another heavyweight release might be imminent.
The intriguing part is why Tai Tuivasa, with a five-fight losing streak and devastating losses in all but one fight, hasn't been affected by the roster purge.
Popular MMA analyst Dovy Simu posted a screenshot of Tuivasa's losing streak, leading some to question why he's still in the UFC. Spinnin Backfist, another social media account, even pointed out the UFC's recent cut of Jairzinho Rozenstruik, known as "Bigi Boy."

Rozenstruik, ranked No. 9 at the time, lost to Sergey Pavlovich in a lackluster decision in February 2024. Before the loss, Rozenstruik had won two consecutive fights and boasted a 15-6 overall record. Notably, Rozenstruik defeated Tuivasa via split decision in August 2024.
Given Rozenstruik's impressive track record and recent success, his release came as a surprise. However, Tuivasa's current five-fight skid, characterized by brutal losses and a lack of wins in three years, is even more bewildering.

Here's where things get complex. Tuivasa might still be under contract. While Rozenstruik's release might seem abrupt, it might also be due to the promotion deciding not to renew his deal rather than actively cutting him.
When Tuivasa's contract expires, if he hasn't turned his fortunes around with a win, he might face the same fate as Rozenstruik.

Two other reasons could explain Tuivasa's continued presence in the UFC. First, he is an all-action fighter who loves throwing bombs and engaging in fan-friendly brawls. His hard-hitting style is a major crowd-pleaser, which could be a factor in his survival in the UFC.
Second, Tuivasa's charm and charisma resonate with fight fans. Unlike Rozenstruik, who had a somewhat lackluster performance against Pavlovich, UFC President Dana White described it as "horrible." Tuivasa's boyish charm and lovable everyman persona make him a favorite among many fans.

However, it's not all sunshine and smiles for Tuivasa. Despite his popularity, some argue that Rozenstruik's release was unjustified given their recent fight result. Even though Rozenstruik dropped two consecutive decisions, he had previously shown impressive KO power.
Fans argue that if Tuivasa loses again or at the end of his contract, justice will be served. If Tuivasa manages to score a big win, however, he'll likely remain in the UFC for a while longer, much to the delight of his fans.
