Arkansas Family Files Lawsuit Against Airbnb Over Hidden Camera in Smoke Detector
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — An Arkansas family has launched a legal battle against Airbnb after discovering a hidden camera inside a smoke detector during a trip last year.
Eliot Young, his wife, and their two teenage sons traveled to Scottsdale, Arizona, for a relaxing break and MLB spring training. However, their vacation took an unexpected turn when Young felt uneasy about a smoke detector hanging above their bed.
After performing a Google search the following morning, Young identified the same smoke detector with a concealed camera online. Upon closer examination, he found that the device had an SD card slot and was Wi-Fi enabled. Young retrieved the card and was disturbed to find explicit content on it.
"What if it streamed to his computer? What if he's accessing this, watching us remotely?" Young said, prompting him to contact the police. The authorities later informed him that someone would get in touch within a few days.
Airbnb acknowledged the issue in a statement, confirming that hidden cameras are banned on their platform. The company supported Young and suspended the host involved from the platform last year. Airbnb remains ready to cooperate with law enforcement.
Scottsdale police also issued a statement, noting that the homeowner was cited for requiring a vacation rental license and failing to respond to emergencies. The police classified the incident as a civil violation, as the original individual who found the SD card was not on the videos.
The police investigation revealed that only previous Airbnb guests had appeared on the secretive recordings. Neither Young nor any members of his family were victims or featured in the recordings.
"It makes me suspicious to stay anywhere, not just at an Airbnb or anywhere outside of my home. I feel like you're always being watched," Young said. He expressed concern about potential risks associated with hidden cameras, particularly in areas targeted towards children.
