Google Chrome 139 for Android has rolled out with several updates aimed at enhancing the Tab Group feature and providing minor tweaks to improve user experience.

Tab Group Enhancements

The latest version of Chrome for Android introduces a new "Add tab to group" option in the three-dot menu. This option, located at the top of the menu, allows users to manage their tab groups more efficiently. Tapping the "Add tab to group" button opens a bottom sheet that lists all existing groups and provides the option to create a new one [1][2][3].

In addition, the Tab Grid switcher has been updated with a "New tab group" button, offering quick access to create new groups [1][2][3].

Other Changes

Chrome 139 also brings some changes to the dark mode interface. The dark mode has been made lighter, transitioning towards a grey tone. This change aims to create a more uniform look by removing the distinction between the top row of actions and the first section in the three-dot menu [1][2].

A new four-color 'G' logo has been added to the New Tab Page. However, this change may go unnoticed by many users [1][2]. It is worth noting that this 'G' logo does not seem to serve any functional purpose.

Another noticeable change is the improvement in the address bar's "Copy link" action. Previously, tapping the "Copy link" action caused the Pixel's corner preview to say "Copied", but the URL was not actually saved to your clipboard. This issue has been addressed in Chrome 139 [1].

Design Changes

The design changes to Chrome for Android's New Tab Page, including the 'G' logo, are not mentioned in the list of changes to Tab Group functionality, the three-dot menu, or the Tab Grid switcher. It appears that these changes are part of the same design updates as the Dynamic Color for the dark theme.

Google has been making changes to Dynamic Color for the dark theme in Chrome. In May, Chrome 136 made it less vibrant and darker. However, version 139 goes the opposite direction and makes it lighter, much closer to gray [1].

These updates aim to make tab management more intuitive and visually cohesive, providing a smoother browsing experience for Android users.

  1. With the recent updates in Google Chrome 139 for Android, the user now has the option to add a smartphone tab to an existing group or create a new group directly from the three-dot menu, which includes a 'New tab group' button in the updated Tab Grid switcher.
  2. Beyond enhancing the Tab Group feature, Google Chrome 139 has also introduced design changes, such as a new four-color 'G' logo on the New Tab Page, aimed at creating a more uniform overall look and feel, and improving user experience on Android devices.
